Ring announcing for a boxing event is basically like emceeing a wedding

I’ve emceed all sorts of different events. Conferences, camps, quiz bowls, award ceremonies… even weddings (which can be sentimentally fun). I wanted to try something a bit different but also somewhat familiar.

So what is most similar to a wedding? A boxing event of course.

Wait, how are they similar?

In weddings, I introduce the bride (and accompanying family) and groom (and accompanying family) in their respective entrance music themes. in boxing events, I would introduce the blue corner (and accompanying gym) and red corner (and accompanying gym) in their respective entrance music themes.

Both weddings and boxing events can get violent. If you don’t think weddings are violent then you haven’t been to the South Asian weddings I’ve been to. Let’s just say, there is a South Asian tradition involving the bride's family stealing the groom’s shoes and holding them for ransom at an exorbitant price. It’s normally supposed to be a simple / cute thing but it can get really competitive.

Both South Asian weddings and boxing events feature doctor(s) who watch the events unfold and assist if the need arises. (The last South Asian wedding I went to, my entire table was filled with doctors!)

Who doesn’t love passionate shouting?

Anyway it was a blast working with Oakvile Boxing Academy and King of the Ring Boxing Club this past month. Before that, “learning the ropes” at Boxing Ontario’s Provincial Championships and Novice Tournament was a great crash course for me.

(I am taking requests for ring announcing… or wedding emceeing … or both at the same time if you have an interesting wedding theme) → https://www.hamzahmoin.com/contact-hamzah
